How to find a poker room: part 1

Online poker is becoming more and more popular every day, and a lot of poker rooms pop-up on the market, seeking to accomodate the increasing demand of the online poker players. This is why choosing a poker room can be a hard task for someone who has never played before and who doesn’t know what to look for in a poker site.

This is why we have prepared a series of articles to help you find your way around and ultimately – find the best poker room to start your career.

Today we start with the most important thing you should be looking for when choosing a poker site: the poker software. You really need good and reliable poker software.

But what does this mean? A lot of poker software applications have lots of bugs that cause them to freeze and crash in the middle of the game. You don’t want this. Losing a big pot because you played badly is hard to take, but losing it because of a software crash (even if you played peorfectly!) is just infuriating. If you intend to develop a strong and successful poker career, you need to have a software you can rely on.

The poker client you choose needs to be intuitive and easy to use as well. You don’t want to be clicking thought the menus for ages in order to find the options and features you are looking for. Search for a poker client with clearly organized and easily accessible menus. The more user-friendly the software, the faster you will be able to sit at the tables and start playing!

KIMILSUNG wins the Bad Beat Jackpot for the 3rd time

They say that fortune favors the bold – and we seem to be witnessing a proof of this.

When our player KIMILSUNG won his first bad beat jackpot, we were really excited for him. When he did it for a second time, we were exctatic. Imagine our reaction, when we saw him claiming a huge cash prize for hitting the bad beat jackpot again last week! We were left speechles!

was playing at his favorite jackpot tables as usual, when he was dealt 8c-9c, He got involved in the pot and his heart must have jumped a beat, when the flop brought Jc-Tc-Qc. He had hit a straight flush! Little did he know that at that point one his opponents had been celebrating in his head, because of his starting hand Ac-Kc, making him the holder of a Royal Flush.

When it all came to showdown, there were bad news and good news for KIMILSUNG. The bad news was, he had suffered an epic bad beat. The good news? He had won the bad beat jackpot – AGAIN! And let’s face it – with a cash prize of $86,000 it’s not that hard to accept any bad beat. Congratulations, KIMILSUNG!

Bad Beat Jackpot hit again

The Bad Beat Jackpot seems to be of fire these days. First we saw one of our players hitting it twice in a row, and now the jackpot has gone off again.

The last week of February turned out to be a good week for holycowthisisit and his oponents. Lady Luck must have been really bored, as she kept surprising the players at the table. Lets take a look at what happened.

It all started when holycowthisisit was dealt pocket 9′s. His opponent yyyuuuiii4 was dealt 8h 7h. Two other players called the blinds and a fifth opponent raised with pocket K’s. The four remaining players all called.

The flop came The 9d 10h Jh and yyyuuuiii4 hit a straight with a straight flush draw; holycowthisisit flopped a set of 9′s. The player holding the pocket Kings was impatient and shoved all-in.

One of players folded and another one called. holycowthisisit chose to go all-in too; yyyuuuiii4 had him covered and called the shove while a fourth player also had to go all-in to cover the call.

The turn brought a 10s and holycowthisisit or yyyuuuiii4‘s hands didn’t improve.

The river was – that’s right – a 9h, so holycowthisisit got his quads and yyyuuuiii4 hit the straight flush he was waiting for.

holycowthisisit got his hand beaten, but he had no reason to be angry as this bad beat also brought him the bad beat jackpot and a juicy prize of $112,000.98. yyyuuuiii4 got $56,000.49 for beating holycowthisisit’s hand and the other players at the table all walked away with $9,333.41 each. Not a bad way to end the month, isn’t it?

Congratulations to the winners! If you want your name to appear in our next blog post about the Bad Beat Jackpot, head straight to the BluffRoom lobby and take your seat at the jackpot tables!

KIMILSUNG: “It’s important to take any edge you can get”

He started playing poker to fight an addiction and reached the point where he says that poker is his life. He believes in luck but also has a strategy for winning pots and jackpots, he loves the thrill of a live poker game and shares wisdom that reminds us of Kurt Vonnegut’s legendary advise to wear sunscreen. Meet KIMILSUNG, the Bluff Room Poker player who hit the Bad Beat Jackpot twice in only three months.

BR: Hi, KIMILSUNG, and thank you for agreeing to the interview. We’ll very much enjoy getting to know more about you. The first question that pops into our minds is how and when did you start playing poker?

KIMILSUNG: I started playing in 2008. At the time I was working through a program and my sponsor suggested replacing my problem addiction with a new hobby.

BR: It’s usually the other way around – but we’re glad to see this has worked for you. Are you a recreational player or you take the game more seriously and play professionally?
KIMILSUNG: I’m a serious recreational player. I love the action. I hate to wait. When I walk into a poker room, I own it. I control the game. You might say that poker is my life.

BR: We’re glad to know that someone whose life is all poker choses to play in our poker room! How did you find out about Bluff Room Poker?
KIMILSUNG: My friend Fralle told me about Bluff Room Poker and I’ve been playing there ever since.

BR: What are, according to you, the best features of Bluff Room?
KIMILSUNG: I’m a big fan of the Bad Beat Jackpot (laughs).

BR: We figured – during the last three months you managed to win a share of our Bad Bead Jackpot twice. Tell us more about this – how did it happen, how it made you feel?
KIMILSUNG: The first time I won a share of the Bad Beat Jackpot, I didn’t even realize it had happened until after my session. I looked at my cashier screen, and there was so much money there! Thinking back and analyzing my session, I realized that it was almost mathematically impossible for me to have won that much money. Most importantly, I didn’t remember winning any pots of that size! I had to contact the helpful Bluff Room live support to confirm that I did win a share of the Bad Beat Jackpot. It felt exciting!
The second time, I was obviously more experienced with winning Bad Beat Jackpots. After studying my previous win, I was able to feel it was coming even before the cards were dealt. It’s like there was a voice in my head, screaming in a whisper: “PREPARE YOURSELF KIMILSUNG”. I was prepared. As a result, my victory was slightly less exciting, but still gratifying nonetheless.

BR: Well, we were definitely excited to see you won again – we actually get excited about every big win of our players. But back to online poker, what factors do you consider when choosing an online poker room? What makes a poker room a good one?
KIMILSUNG: For me, as much as I love poker online, nothing beats the live poker experience. The closer a site comes to replicating a live cardroom, the better! The sound of the chips, the smell of the air, the sweat on my brow. Wondering who the lineup is? Where the action spots are? That’s poker, folks.

BR: What is your game of choice? What limits do you play?
KIMILSUNG: I typically play the fast-paced action-packed full ring no-limit holdem games on Bluff Room, at limits ranging from .5/1 to 3/6.

BR: You mentioned before that you are very serious about your game so do you set yourself poker goals?
KIMILSUNG: I definitely set goals for every session. For instance, last night my goal was to get dealt pocket aces five times. It’s good to push yourself; it’s how you improve as a player.

BR: What are the qualities one must have to be a successful poker player?
KIMILSUNG: It’s important to mix up your game. For example, I love to limp and trap people before the flop. Also, it’s important to buy in for the maximum. When you’re in the chip lead, it’s easy to bully the table into making mistakes with aggressive play. The chip lead also allows you to make aggressive calls that other players might shy away from.

BR: According to you, how important is luck in a game of poker? Do you consider yourself lucky?
KIMILSUNG: Luck is a very important element of poker. Luck determines who wins and who loses in the short-term. As the long-term is really just a handful of short-terms, it follows that luck mostly determines who wins and loses in the long-term too.
On the other hand, there is less luck involved with Bad Beat Jackpots. It’s obvious which hands can win or lose the Bad Beat Jackpot. Pocket pairs and suited connectors are hands you don’t want to fold before the flop — for any price. This is because the implied odds you get to create a Bad Beat Jackpot with these hands makes up for slightly unprofitable decisions before the flop.
Also, it’s important to never fold after the flop if your hand could potentially trigger a Bad Beat Jackpot.

BR: Do you think education (e.g. reading strategic articles, analyzing your hand histories, watching educational poker videos, etc.) is important for poker players? Or should one improve their game simply by playing more?
KIMILSUNG: If you simply copy the strategies everyone else is using from videos and articles, you end up creating a style that’s easy to exploit. I think it’s far more important to put in the hours playing and developing your own personal style. This way you’ll be a true loose cannon and nobody will know what to expect from you at the tables!

BR: And last but not least, is there any advice you would like to give to the other Bluff Room players?
KIMILSUNG: Consume a multivitamin before your next session. It’s important to take every edge you can get.

BR: That’s actually great advice. Thank you!

What are the chances of hitting the same jackpot twice? Pretty slim, according to most people. However, this is not the case for one of the Bluff Room Poker players. Yes, that’s right: KIMILSUNG did it again and took home a nice share of our Bad Beat Jackpot.

The last time he won a share of the jackpot, he got himself the huge prize of $13,033.55. Learn more about it in our previous blog post. This time his share was slightly smaller, yet we can all agree that luck is at his side.

Bluff Room Player wins a $3,300 package to CAPT

The Casino Austria Poker Tour (CAPT) is one of the major live poker events in Europe. During the last 3 years, the event scored a great success and this year looks promising for the players, too.

The tour consists of 7 tournament weeks played at 7 casinos and the main event of each week is a NL Texas Hold’em tournament with a buy-in of €2,000. The tour will reach its high point in October 2011, when the 22nd European Poker Championship will take place at Grand Casino Baden.

This year we at Bluff Room Poker gave all our players a chance to take part in CAPT by playing an online qualifier tournament. All the players who paid the $33 buy-in of this satellite tournament competed for the big prize: a $3,300 package for the CAPT tournament week at Casino Seefeld.

The player field of the qualifier was relatively small so it has a great value for all the participants. It is our greatest pleasure to announce the winner – the player with screen name Mikestock, who only signed up with Bluff Room Poker a few days before the qualifier. Congratulations, Mikestock! We will be keeping an eye on your performance at the Seefeld Casino, where a prize pool of €1,000,000 is expected.

As you see, it doesn’t take much to become a poker star. To make sure you don’t miss any of the action, make sure to keep an eye on the tournament lobby at Bluff Room.

Merry Christmas to our Russian community!

While in most Christian countries around the world people open their Christmas presents on December 25, in Russia things are a bit different. The Russian Orthodox church celebrates Christmas on January 7 – which is, in fact, December 25 on the Julian Calendar (that calendar runs 13 days behind the internationally used Gregorian one).

So without further due – Merry Christmas to all our Russian players! Or, as they will say it: С рождеством Христовым!
